In Passing

Series, Self-initiated, Utrecht,Girona, '24, '26

In Passing grew out of work I made over the past two years. When I returned to photography after almost thirty-five years, my images were almost completely devoid of people. Striking, because people had once played an important role in my photography.

Slowly, they began to reappear. At first mainly for practical reasons: to provide scale, rhythm or to reinforce a sense of stillness. Never in the leading role, always as the supporting act.

That made me think about something else. Every day, we cross countless lives without ever really stopping to consider who those people are. In our own lives, we play the leading role, while others often appear as little more than extras in our story. Even though, of course, they are living complete lives of their own.

In In Passing, I turn that around and, for a moment, give these anonymous figures the leading role.

In its May 2026 issue, Dutch photography magazine PF featured the series.
